Breaking News: Roman Abramovich Goes To Court Over Chelsea Sale

Roman Abramovich has taken his legal battle to a new level after challenging actions linked to the sale of Chelsea.

The former owner has filed a claim with the European Court of Human Rights, arguing that an ongoing investigation into his financial affairs has breached his rights.

According to The Times, the case centres around actions taken by authorities in Jersey.

Abramovich remains under UK sanctions due to his links to Vladimir Putin.

At the same time, Jersey officials have been investigating allegations of corruption and money laundering connected to his assets.

That investigation has already had major consequences. Around £5.3 billion of his assets remain frozen on the Channel Island.
Now, Abramovich’s legal team have pushed back strongly.

In their claim to the European Court of Human Rights, they described the investigation as “unfair and abusive.”

Representatives for Abramovich told The Times:

“This investigation, which has dragged on for years without charges, transparency or credible evidence, represents a clear abuse of power by the government of Jersey and a violation of fundamental rights.

“Authorities have withheld key information and ignored basic procedural safeguards, showing how this is not a legitimate legal process but one driven by political motives.”

“We expect the European court of human rights to recognise these failures and reach the same conclusion.”

A company linked to Abramovich previously suggested that the £2.4 billion raised could be treated as potential proceeds of crime by Jersey authorities.

That money was pledged to support victims of the war in Ukraine, but it has not yet been released.

According to The Times, Abramovich’s claim argues a breach in his right to a fair trial.

He also claims the violation of his right to privacy following a public announcement about the investigation in 2022.

Meanwhile, the UK government remains the official respondent in the case.

The situation has created further tension over the funds.

The British government wants the money directed specifically towards Ukraine, while Abramovich has indicated he prefers greater flexibility.

As a result, the legal battle over Chelsea’s sale continues to intensify.
